Dip #16 - One from the heart and #12 for Ciarán!

On Tuesday 16th December,  9 members of the Hearty Hulks gathered at their primary launching deck get in the 8° water once again, and also to celebrate teammate Ciarán Seawright's dip #12

Before entering the water for his 12th dip to complete his challange taget, Ciarán showed his true strength by speaking openly about his own heart life-long heart condition. Hear what he had to say here:

Thank you Ciarán for sharing your story, and for showing others that by fully embracing what we perceive as our own weaknesses, we infact demonstrate the strength that we truely have.

After their dip, 6 of the team continued the celebration of Ciarán's 12th with a special visit to one of the team's corperate sponsor venues, the topical-like climate of his own family-run business, the widely renowned 'The Water School' at Pearson's Bridge, West Cork.

The team almost cried with delight when their frozen feet felt the the underfloor heating in the changing room, and the 32°C water warmed and soothed them to the core.

Dip #15 - Going for broke!

This morning, six members of the team were joined for a one-off dip by honorary Hearty Hulk Chester Woods.

Comparing the 'sheltered waters' of Bantry bay to those of the wilds of Kerry, Chester was surprised when he felt that the Hulk's home territory was in fact cooler than our Kerry cousins'.

After a refreshing dip #15 in the soft falling rain, all the swimmers enjoyed a hot cup before wishing each other well and heading off on their separate ways.

Hearty Hulk Michael McColgan got his dip in at the beautifully "baltic" Pooleen, and fellow teammate Aidan O'Shea managed to rack up another one on his way home in the evening.  Fair play to you Aidan!

Dip #14 to support Bantry Lifeboat's Dip #1

This morning (Sunday 14th) six of the Hearty Hulks had an earlier start that usual and drove through the dark and lashing rain to support members of the Bantry Lifeboat in their own quest to complete a 12 dips challange too!

After meeting the Bantry Lifeboat crew at their station by the old railway pier, a collective of 11 slightly subdued guys all entered the water under darkness wind and rain at around 7am.

The hardy Bantry Lifeboat crew, daily frequenters of the waters of Bantry Bay, demonstrated their tolerance of the water temperatures with grace and ease to the impressed Hearty Hulks. 

The wonderful Bantry Lifeboat crew are doing their own 12 dip challange to raise essential funds for a different cause - for the continued operation of their own essential service which depends on donations from the community and surrounding area.  

After the dip, team HH joined the Bantry Lifeboat crew for a decent cup of coffee and cake at their fundraising coffee morning in De Barras Restaurant, Wolfe Tone Square Bantry.

They are currently doing their own 12 dips of December to raise money for the Bantry Lifeboat service, and the Hearty Hulks are in full support with them.

Slightly later in the day, Hearty Hulks Forrest Moore and Michael McColgan both took a dip, or possibly more of a drenching(!!) in each of their own private waterfalls.  That'd wake up the senses for sure!

The Hearty Hulks were spoilt for their dip today (Sat 13th) with a sponsored sauna session on Snave pier from the fantastically hearty @westcorksauna.

Ten of the Hearty Hulks took the plunge into the 8° water and then warmed themselves to the bone multiple times while gazing out into Bantry bay through the impressive glass gable wall of the barrel-shaped sauna.

After their time was up, photos were taken of the event, and then a team member's birthday was celebrated with tea, cake and plenty of craic.

There team also celebrated the return of some of their fallen brothers - robbed from them last week with the dirty flu.. but who are now back in the game and hungry for more.

With the sun and rain dancing together, the tide was high and so was the energy.

The Hearty Hulks entered the water with steely determination,  and all celebrated Jay Cornish's 12th dip of the challange!

Earlier in the morning,  Hearty Hulk Ronan Casey was joined by Lifeboat crew member Dan O'Leary for his dip.

How this'll work...

Today, the Hearty Hulks recorded their 12th collective dip!  But the 12 dip challange is far from over or complete!  

Each member of the team has to tally their own number of individual dips, therefore team Hearty Hulks will keep going until evey member has done 12 dips themselves.  This will of course mean that some members will far exceed their own initial target of 12 dunks, but no brother will be left behind (even if they'd rather they were!).

And sure, ... how bad?  ... its possible that some of them may even be starting to enjoy it at this stage!

Another strong turnout for the team with 10 members being able to attend today's morning shift. All were hopeful for a monsoon-style dip as they drove through the hammering rain towards their launching deck, however the Hearty Hulks were infact met with mirror-calm conditions and dry weather upon their arrival. .... what a disappointment! ;-) Congratulations to Michael McColgan for completing his 12 dip challange today! The Hearty Hulks were delighted to be joined by 3 new team members for collective dip #10.

Tadhg Myler, David Mendez and Manuel Quiros were all baptised as Hearty Hulks when they joined the team and braved the icy waters.  Well done guys, and great to have you on board!

HH Ciarán Seawright also got one in as part of the collective team tally, as did Michael McColgan in the afternoon at Ellen's rock.

This now brings the number of Hearty Hulks to a staggering 17.  Furthermore, the team last night broke the €5k fundraising mark, which also put them into 3rd place nationally out of 220+ teams.  A huge thank you to everyone for their incredible support!

With only a short leap again to get them into second position on the National Leaderboard, team HH now have their hearts set on climbing that ladder again..

With the weather reports looking bleak to say the least on Tuesday morning, team HH sent out a scout to assess the water conditions before anyone arrived.

Thankfully, Banty bay was afforded shelter from the chop that the rest of the country was subjected to, and it was deemed that no additional risks were present for the morning dip.  That said, team life guard Ciarán Seawright remained dry on the pier just for good measure. 

Four of the Hearty Hulks entered the placid waters at Snave and racked up dip #9 for the team, while Michaeal McColgan squeezed one in at Ellen's rock in the afternoon.

Dip #8 ... Fire, Earth and Water.

Last night, 3 (out of the now 15 Hearty Hulks) had another very special experience with 'The Badger Sauna', which is beautifully run by Sarah Goyvaerts and Seb Beukers. The team members fully immersed themselves into the multi-sensory experience of Lithuanian Pirtis.... Coarse sea-salt & juniper body scrub, aromatherapy, 'whisking', and earthly mud. A highly recommended experience with a 5 star rating. We also shared some of our past troubles between us in a safe and respectful space. Quite an evening. Earlier in the day, there was a morning shift of dips too, with Will Donaldson, Ciarán Seawright, and Tom Cox, being joined by Michael McColgan and Jay Cornish who both managed 2 dips in the same day. ... its easy when the company is so good!

Sunday saw another push from members of the team who managed to keep the ship afloat for team HH.

They were also joined by some special supporters too.... some junior Hearty Hulks who came along to see what on earth dad had been up to this past week.

Lucky members of the Hearty Hulks had a very special dip indeed today with an exclusive visit from Wesht Cork's newest mobile sauna - 'The Badger Sauna'.

Sarah Goyvaerts and Seb Beukers of 'The Badger Sauna' even provided team HH with a coarse sea salt and juniper body scrub to apply to each other, which the  Hearty Hulks just dived straight in to!

Earlier in the day, fellow team mates Ronan Casey and Jason Wycherley both managed to squeeze in a dip into their day too.

And a big shout out to those in team that are recovering from man-flu.... our hearts are with you brothers as we know how bad it can be!

Dip #4 (Thursday 4th)

With snow on the hill and flu in the air, the Hearty Hulks pushed through to wash off the cold and rack up dip #4.
Five members of the team including Jay Cornish, Ronan Casey, Will Donaldson, Tom Cox, and Pete Little enjoyed another refreshing dunk in the basking sun at Snave!
Meanwhile, to the wesht, Hearty Hulk Steve G managed to squeeze in a solo dip at Ellen's Rock.  On the other side if the Bay, Michael McColgan and Ciarán Seawright buddied up to tackle their dip at Bantry slip (and roared in defiance at the cooler water temps they found themselves in there!).
Earlier in the day, team member Jay Cornish got some Team HH posters printed up to help spread the word, so keep your eyes open around the area for those, witn updated poster-pictures planned as the weeks progress.

The Hearty Hulks turned out in force again across the day for their second dunk of the 12 dips challange!

Early bird and Hearty Hulk Ronan Casey couldn't hang around for the crew so made an early break for it and led the way (again!) for the Hulks second collective dip.

Marginally escaping a burst of heavy rain this morning, seven members of the team  were greeted by the sun and calm waters as they braced themselves for the cold once more. In attendance were Michael McColgan,  Will Donaldson,  Ciarán Seawright, Jay Cornish,  Steve G, Simon Allen, Maarten La Haye

The water was definitely a touch cooler than yesterday, with the concrete of the pier itself was acting as a giant heat-sink for all the warmth in their feet!
 
After another jubilant group submergance, team HH dried themselves off and warmed up with a cocktail of brews and chats and laughter. 

The evening shift then kicked off after dark, with Hearty Hulks Aidan O'Shea, Jason Wycherley, and Jay Cornish joining forces to embrace the torch-lit ocean. The energy was high as they skitted down the steps and entered the water without a moments hesitation.

And we're off!.....

It was a phenomenal turnout for the 'Hearty Hulks' on the first official day of the Irish Heart Foundations '12 dips of December' challange.

An impressive 10 out of the growing team of now 12 members managed to get one of their 12 dips scratched off today.

Seven of the team met at Snave for the morning shift. These were Michael McColgan, Tom Cox, Forrest Moore, Will Donaldson, Maarten La Haye, Jay Cornish, and Simon Allen who all made getting into 11°C water look easy (as long as you weren't actually there to see or hear it).

Fellow team members Jason Wycherley, Ciarán Seawright and Aidan O'Shea all managed to get their own dips in during the day and eveing.

Two members of the team were unfortunately unable to join the fun today,..we know how gutted they were to not able to join us.

But with the 12 dips being able to be done througout the entirety of December,  there's still plenty of time left for everyone, as well as for any potential new members still out there!

Thursday 27th Warm Up!

An outstanding turnout by the Hearty Hulks this morning, and the 12 dips hasn't even officially begun! 

Getting in for a pre-dip warm-up dunk were Jay Cornish, Maarten La Haye, Simon Allen, Michael McColgan and Forrest Moore.  

Hearty Hulk Ronan Casey couldn't hang around and was so keen that he was already in the water when the other Hulks turned up (we grabbed a photo to prove he actually did it!).  

Also a big shout out to all the other members of the team who weren't able to join in this morning - we know you would've been there if you could.

It was fresh for sure, but a warm cup and a few hearty laughs afterwards brought us all back up to temp. ....Go on team Hearty Hulks!

Help Protect Hearts in Ireland

Help support us with the Irish Heart Foundation's charity fundraiser challenge -  the '12 Dips of December'! This involves getting into open water, a pool or ice bath at least 12 times over the course of the month of December.

Team 'Hearty Hulks' is a growing collection of men supporting men, not only for this particular challenge, but also to highlight the importance of men talking to men about their health generally in the modern world we live in.  Our primary launching deck is Snave pier, West Cork.

The Irish Heart Foundation’s mission is to eliminate preventable death and disability from heart disease and stroke and to support and care for those living with these life-changing conditions.
