12 Dips in December 2025 - Supported by Daybreak

Help Protect Hearts in Ireland

Hi everyone,

The Irish Heart Foundation’s mission is to eliminate preventable death and disability from heart disease and stroke and to support and care for those living with these life-changing conditions.

Accordingly, the IHF run an annual charity fundraiser challenge called the '12 Dips of December'. This involves getting into open water, a pool or an ice bath at least 12 times during December.

Over the last six months or so I've found that regularly getting into the ocean has been hugely beneficial to me.  When I heard about the Irish Heart Foundation's '12 dip challenge',  it felt like a logical step to combine the two, especially as most people have been effected by heart health one way or another.

Another opportunity was seen too... so a 'challenge team' has been created - 'The Hearty Hulks!'.  This is a growing collection of men supporting men, not only for this particular challenge, but also to highlight the importance of men talking to men about their health generally in the modern world we live in.

I'm very happy to see that team Hearty Hulks is growing in numbers, and this is only going to add to the fun and importance of what's being done.  Our primary launching deck is Snave pier, West Cork.

As part of the challenge, we need to prove we've actually done a dip by taking a photo or two and posting online, so please feel free to follow our progress as we go.

If you'd be able to help spread the word, and consider supporting (or even joining!) what we're doing, I'd be very grateful.

Your donation and support will make a real difference to people and families affected by heart disease and stroke.

Thank you for visiting my page.

All the best to you all,

Jay

Dip #8

Tuesday 9th Dec
(Left to right) Hearty Hulks Ronan Casey, Jay Cornish, and Michael McColgan). Last night, 3 (out of the now 15 Hearty Hulks) had another very special experience with 'The Badger Sauna', which is beautifully run by Sarah Guivers and Seb Beukers. The team members fully immersed themselves into the multi-sensory experience of Lithuanian Pirtis.... Coarse sea-salt & juniper body scrub, aromatherapy, 'whisking', and earthly mud. A highly recommended experience with a 5 star rating. We also shared some of our past troubles between us in a safe and respectful space. Quite an evening.

Dip #7 (Mon 8th)

Tuesday 9th Dec
After a busy weekend in the city getting ready for Christmas, I was very thankful to be back in the water. Unfortunately an appointment meant I couldn't join some of the team for their earlier dip, but it was still good to be out there.

Dip #6....half way there.

Friday 5th Dec
Members of the Hearty Hulks had a very special dip indeed today with an exclusive visits from West Corks newest mobile sauna - 'The Badger Sauna'.

Sarah and Seb of The Badger Sauna even provided team HH with a coarse sea salt and juniper body scrub to apply to each other, which the  Hearty Hulks just dived straight in to!

'Old-School'...

Friday 5th Dec
Got our team posters printed and up around the place today. ....fairly important as I don't think any of us know how to operate FB or IG. Old-school will just have to do.

The controversial 'double-dip'...

Tuesday 2nd Dec
Dip #2 achieved today with another fine gathering of the team this morning.  The water felt a touch cooler again, and the concrete of the pier itself was acting as a giant heat-sink for all the warmth in our feet!

The sun was shining though, and the waters calm which was so pleasant it made it almost feel like cheating.  ...almost.

Yesterday evening, fellow team mate Aidan O'Shea braved it out on his own, so I decided to join in this evening again to give  him some support and scratch off dip #3 while I was at it.  Hearty Hulk Jason Wycherley also came for the craic, and the energy was high as we all skitted down the steps in the torch-lit waters.

What a phenomenal thing to be doing.

And we're off!....

Monday 1st Dec
Today was a special day.... the first day of the challange, but also the first day of a new team effort.  Team Hearty Hulks has been steadily growing in numbers and we're now up to 12 members.  We've also smashed our fundraising target numerous times, and we're collectively now just broken the €3,000 mark. Incredible stuff.

Please continue to support this drive, and follow me and the Hearty Hulks Team page as we go on this journey.

For further expansion on the below, pleae follow the link to my team page.

Thank you all x

It was a phenomenal turnout for the 'Hearty Hulks' on the first official day of the Irish Heart Foundations '12 dips of December' challange.

An impressive 10 out of the growing team of now 12 members managed to get one of their 12 dips scratched off today.

Seven of the team met at Snave for the morning shift. These were Michael McColgan, Tom Cox, Forrest Moore, Will Donaldson, Maarten La Haye, Jay Cornish, and Simon Allen who all made getting into 11°C water look easy (as long as you weren't actually there to see or hear it).

Fellow team members Jason Wycherley, Ciarán Seawrite and Aidan O'Shea all managed to get their own dips in during the day and eveing.

Two members of the team were unfortunately not able to get their dips in today,..we know how gutted they were to not able to join us.

But with the 12 dips being able to be done througout the entirety of December,  there's still plenty of time left for everyone, as well as for any potential new members still out there!

Thank you for your support!

Saturday 29th Nov
Just to say a massive thank you to everyone for all your support!

We've already hit and increased our fundraising target a number times already, and the challange hasn't even started yet!

The team is growing, the word is being spread, and we can't wait to get going as soon as December arrives.

Thanks again to you all, from the bottom of our hearts.

Proof we did it!

The troops are mounting...

Thursday 27th Nov
An outstanding turnout by the Hearty Hulks this morning, and the 12 dips hasn't even officially begun!

Fantastic to be joined by fellow team mates Maarten La Haye, Simon Allen, Michael McColgan and Forrest Moore.

Hearty Hulk Ronan Casey couldn't hang around and was so keen that he was just going in when I turned up (check out his page for proof he actually did it!).

Also a big shout out to all the other members of the team who weren't able to join us this morning - I know you would've been there if you could.

It was fresh for sure, but a warm cup and a few hearty laughs afterwards brought us all back up to temp.  Go on the Hulks!

Pre-12 dips 'warm up'

Wednesday 26th Nov
Went for a pre-12 dips dunk this morning with fellow Hearty Hulk team member Ronan Casey. Water had a bit of a sting, but we warmed up fast enough once we got out!

Building the team and awareness.

Sunday 23rd Nov
Hi everyone,
12 Dips in December is on! ... a good opportunity to raise funds for a very worthy cause, as well as getting a few chaps together for a laugh and chat.
Team 'Hearty Hulks' is building, and we might even get in for a couple of dunks before December starts.
Thanks for your support and generosity everyone.
